Galería de Preparación

Preparations for the September 9th processional take meticulous care, time, and energy. This section presents this process in three sections: Adornment, Ancestor Work, and September 8th-Tambor de Salida.

Adornment

Ancestor Work

September 8th, Tambor de salida

On September 8th, the Orishas are brought out into the street and carried to the Sala Extensión del Museo de Regla (a building within the church complex) where they “sleep” over night. This is to honor the 20th century tradition of Pepa’s processional.

In 2019, Cabildo organizers began the “tambor de salida,” a ritual drumming with the Guiros de San Cristobal batá drums on September 8th. This honors the practice from the 20th century processional and serves to open the processional for the following morning.

The following section presents the September 8th events in order, starting with the Tambor de Salida. It then shows the processional carrying the Orishas to the Sala Extensión, followed by the ritual offering to the processional pathway.
